MISS WORLD 2011 Ivian Sarcos
Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares, Miss Venezuela 2011, has been crowned Miss World 2011, on Saturday night, at Earl's Court in London. The 21-year-old, who was the favorite going into the final rounds, beat out contestants from over 100 other countries to win the title.
After the win, Colmenares told her victory showed that being orphaned at a young age was no barrier to achievement in life. Colmenares' parents died when she was 8; the young girl was raised by nuns in a convent in Cojedes for five years. In fact, so influential was this period in her life that she once dreamt of becoming a nun. She eventually gave up the idea, when she realized she wanted the fame and success that being a model could bring.
"Unfortunately, I lost both my parents at a very young age, which led me to study for five years in a nunnery. I spent my five years in there and my dream was to become a nun," said the new Miss World. Speaking through a translator, she said her victory in an extravagant ceremony in London proved that people's circumstances in life can change.
"This has taught me that life, although it may be bad, doesn't have to end badly. Although I no longer have my parents it has taught me to be stronger," Colmenares was quoted "Winning means everything to me and I hope to take advantage of being a winner in a productive manner."
"I would like to help people like me. I am an orphan. I would also like to help the elderly and troubled teenagers. As many people as I can," added Colmenares, who hails from Guanare in Venezuela's western Portuguesa state.
As the reigning Miss World, Colmenares will spend the next year visiting and supporting a range of charity projects supported by the Miss World Organization's "Beauty with a Purpose" program; the efforts of the program have raised $800 million (580 million euros) in its 40 years.

MISS UNIVERSE 2009 Stefania Fernandez
Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez was crowned the winner of the 2009 Miss Universe pageant.
Dressed in a flowing red gown, 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez hugged the runner-up from the Dominican Republic and danced in joy as her victory was announced Sunday.
Last year's winner Dayana Mendoza whispered in her ear that she must have worked hard for Venezuela to win consecutively - the first time in the 57 year-old competition that a country has had back-to-back Miss Universe winners.
When asked during the questions-and-answers phase of the competition, Fernandez said she believed women have overcome obstacles such as hitting the proverbial glass ceiling. "I feel we have reached the level that men are at."
When asked later how she thought beauty contests promoted equality between men and women, Fernandez said they provided exposure to strong role models for the younger generation of girls to follow.
Stefania Fernandez is from the city of Merida, a city in western Venezuela - a South American country where hard-fought pageants are something of a national sport, with contestants widely dissected by the public and the media.
The President of her country, Hugo Chavez, did not meet last year's winner when she took home the crown, but Fernandez hopes he will change his mind in light of the historical back-to-back wins for the country.

DAYANA Mendoza of Venezuela has been crowned Miss Universe 2008.
The pageant started with 80 contestants and was held in the seaside town of Nha Trang, Vietnam today.
Four Latin Americans made the final five at the 2008 Miss Universe contest, shortly after Miss USA fell down during the evening gown competition for the second year in a row.
It was a nightmare come true for Miss USA Crystle Stewart, a Texan, who tripped on the train of her bejeweled evening gown as she made her entrance.
During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on You Tube, where the video was shown over and over again.
Like Smith, Stewart quickly stood up after her fall and continued on as if nothing had happened.
Shortly after Stewart's mishap occurred, the judges narrowed the field to five finalists: Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza, Miss Colombia Tailana Vargas, Miss Dominican Republic Marianne Cruz Gonzalez, Miss Mexico Elisa Najera, and Miss Russia Vera Krasova.
The NBC show is being hosted by TV host Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown and broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers in 170 countries.
Eighty contestants gathered in the seaside city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, vying to succeed reigning Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan.
Dundovic had hoped to emulate Jennifer Hawkins who took the crown in 2004.

Tall, dark and with delicate features and lively dark eyes, a Caracas office employee landed in London on a hazy autumn day in such anonymity that no one was at the airport to welcome her. Proud of her humble upbringing, three months earlier she had won the crown of Miss Venezuela before a large audience at Tamanaco Hotel. She then took part in the Miss Universe pageant to little acclaim but, with the help of her godmother, Carolina Reverón de Behrens, she mustered up the funds for a plane ticket and flew to London, only to find utter neglect at the airport. Finally, a journalist spotted her and the headline read: Latin Beauty Lost under the London Fog.
